Romans 5:3-5

by Chris on November 6, 2009

If you follow me online at all, you’ve seen me insert this Bible reference in certain places.  You may be familiar with it yourself.  It is my favorite passage that I’ve found in the Bible so far because it is all encompassing for me and my faith.  For this particular time in my life… it is spot on:

…we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Go ahead and let your guard down now.  This is not an attempt to push faith or religion on you.  In fact, I’m quite the opposite when it comes to trying to influence another person’s beliefs.  To each their own.  I’m just letting you know that this passage means something special to me.

Regardless of your beliefs; perseverance, character, and hope are three key ingredients to all of it.

  • you know who it is
The message is a translation of the bible. It is one mans version or transliteration. A preacher for almost 60 years, he made it his life goal to write the bible in contemporary language , or as we college students say, the vernacular. my youth would say..WHAT??? His name is Eugene H Peterson You should check it out some time when you have boo-koo money from your perseverance. Remain steadfast my freind I pray for your success often, I pray for you to find peace in your life, to calm down and accept the fact that you dont desereve anything that you already have. That is what being a Christian is all about. You are a good man Chris, you should be very proud of your accomplishments. Just look at yourself, got a house, Cars, Furniture, a beautiful wife, an amazing child that you get first hand in raising (molding) you are your own boss, really giving your self employment a go, look at your Computer achievments. Wow Chris you are really doin it. Hey In my heart all I want to be is a farmer, and a deer hunter. But look at all the crud i have to do to eat! Insurance can be for the birds when you get your feet on the ground, just like I am not going to dig holes forever my freind, I intend to be far from a shovel one day! :) Anyhow, here is Romans Chapter 5 The message.
By enttering through faith into what God has always wanted to do for us---set us right with him, make us fit for him---we have it all together iwth God because of our Master Jesus. And that's not all: We throw open our doors to God and discover at the same moment that he has already thrown open his door to us. We find ourselves standing where we always hoped we might stand--out in the wide open spaces of God's grace and glory, standing tall and shouting our praise.
There's more to come: We continue to shout our praise even when we're hemmed in with troubles, beacause we know how trouble can develop passionate patience in us, and how that patience in turn forges the tempered steel of virtue, keeping us alert for whateve God will do next. In alert expectancey such as this, were never left feeling shortchanged. Quite the contrary---we can't round up enough containers to hold everything God generously pours into our lives through the Holy Spirit!

My John Macarthur study Bible states Romans 5:3-5
And not only that but we aslso glory in tribulations knowing that tribulation produces perseverance, and perseverance, character, and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.

Here the word Tribulations is a word used for pressure, like that of a press squeezing the fluid form olives or grapes. Here they are not the normal pressures of living, but the inevitable troubles that come to followers of Christ because of their relationship with him (being a Christian is hard! walking like Jesus) Such difficulties produce rich spiritual benifits ( matthew 5:10-12 good stuff on persecution)
Perseverance is sometimes translated as patience, this word refers to endurance, the ability to remain under tremendous weight and pressure without succumbing!
Colossians 1:22-232 a good reference about acknowledging that once youve heard the gospel you are no longer ingorant, you must repent, and accept Jesus as Lord.
Character , or a better translation is proven character, The Greek word simply means 'Proof'. It was used of tesing metals to determine thier purity. Here the proof is Christian character. Christians can glory in tribulations because of what those troubles produce. James 1:12 is all of it-It is not a sin to have temptation, that being human. It is a sin to act on that tempation.
Gods love for us has been lavishly poured out to the point of over flowing within our hearts. Paul moves from the objective aspects of our security in Chist to the internal more subjective. God has implanted within our hearts evidence that we belong to Him in that we love the One who first loved us. AS marvelous testimony to Gods love for us "Spirit who was given"
Just some late night research shared w/ a friend. My neighbor Nick moved out of thier house today, the divorce is progressing. you know they didnt have any religion in their lives. No chruch for their faimily. they needed Christ in thier relationship their son needed to grow up in a church, have a church family. Lilly gets excited to go to chruch, that stuffs sooo fun when your little. sunday school is like play time! As young people who are going to remain steadfast we have a responsibility to our children and wives to be unconcerned with these tribulations. Good scripture Romans chapter 5
